We have experienced the past and the present in the streets of Seoul, completed by our visit to the Samsung Innovation Museum in Suwon, where we could see what technological developments have in store for us.

  After less than a half an hour drive from Seoul, WE REACHED SAMSUNG’S HEADQUARTERS. Here in Suwon, the South-Korean company built an actual city. Over 35,000 people work in Samsung Digital City. To grasp the size of it, the numbers are comparable to those of the entire population of Mangalia.

 

Our visit to Samsung City started with the Samsung Innovation Museum, where we travelled back in time. Here, we saw the first Samsung TV set in the world, as well as the first Samsung hard disk, with only 48 MB of memory. It is also here that we saw the first ever laptop produced in South Korea, manufactured in 1987, which you could not hold in your hands for too long, as it weighed 32 kilograms.

Following an update on the past and the present, we also took a look into the future. We had the opportunity to see how a smart home works – a home where all electric and electronic appliances, such as the washing machine, the fridge and the TV, which are connected to the internet and to each other. For instance, you can switch on your washing machine by giving it a vocal order by mobile, your blinds are drawn automatically when you watch a movie, you can use your phone to check if the front door is locked, and your fridge can tell you when you run out of beer.

South Korea is the most innovative country in the world, as shown also in the Bloomberg Innovation Index rank, with the most substantial investments in research and development. Furthermore, Samsung is one of the most innovative companies in the world. So, what is the secret to the South Korean company? 1 out of 5 Samsung employees works in research and development, in which the company invested USD 15.2 billion last year alone.

Samsung Digital City is a city of innovation, where 34,000 people work in the R&D area to develop Samsung’s future products and services. No less than 12,000 of the 34,000 work in the mobile phone research and development area, and the resulting innovations can be experienced with the Samsung Galaxy smartphone series.
